What If He Left Me?

On my way to work this morning, I had a song stuck in my head.  Kelly Clarkson – Behind These Hazel Eyes.  I decided to listen to the song, as often I do when a song finds its way into the repetitive regions of my brain.  As the song played, I thought about the lyrics.  Song lyrics are usually something highly personal to me, and I sought after what exactly they were touching in my heart.  I realized all at once, that these words would be what I would write if Jesus left me.  I know and I’m thankful that He’ll never leave or forsake me.

That is the gift of God, isn’t it?  Not only does He save us, rescue us, redeem us, restore us, heal us, and love us… not only does He hear us and be with us, use us, and pour His own heart into us… but He never ceases to do so.

I think sometimes in life we take the Spirit of the Lord for granted.  After all, does He really have to love us?  Does He have to bless us?  Is there some law to which God is bound that says He must be our friend?  Only His own word… only His own choice… to love me… to be in my life… to care about the things that concern my heart… that choice is the only thing that keeps Him here with me.  His love is not based on me, or how good I can be, or how much I need Him.  His love is based on His decision to love me – an unchanging constant swayed by no person, power, or force.  As I realized this over again, I thought, “How great is our God?”

It seems about once a month, at a minimum, I’m overwhelmed by Him.  It’s the thought of His love that pries open this heart of mine.  I think of great and awesome He is… and I lament how small and hopeless I am without Him.  “What is man that thou art mindful of him; the son of man that thou visitest him?”  I know what the Psalmist felt when these words were penned.

I just wanted to encourage you today.  The Lord loves you!  Maybe you’re like me and you’ve always had an out-of-this-world relationship with the Spirit of God.  Maybe you’re working towards it.  Maybe you acknowledge the presence of God in your life but have been filling your life with other things.  I just want to encourage you to see life through His eyes.  Think of what life would be like without Him.  Think about the things He does for you… and realize there are thousands more he does of which you will never – can never – know.  Realize that the God that surrounds us all works for your behalf.  He moves the enemy out of your way.  He sacrifices to give you victory.  He brings opportunity to you to give you hope.  … He let you stumble on this humble post to show you just a glimpse of His wonder.

God loves you.  And He’s a Great, Great God.  Spend just a few minutes today with Him and just say, “Jesus, I thank you.  I may not even know what all I’m thanking you for, but I thank you.  Thank you for saving me.  Thank you for loving me.  Thank you for knowing me… and for always handling me with care and loving-kindness – me and all things which have concerned me.”

I played that song today and wept in the presence of the Lord… because I know what I have.  I know He is wonderful.  And of the sad lyrics contained in that catchy song… I’m thankful I’ll never have to feel those things.

Lord, You are a wonder all by Yourself!  Thanks for your love.  :)
